A game where you hate to see either side lose. But, as Coach Catalano said after the game, it's good that our town gets to raise the flag rather than a bunch of strangers. Four teams from our league made it to district finals and that's quite an accomplishment. I can't wait to coach you guys at the JV level in five years... it will be a pleasure. FYI... this will be the last post before heading up to the Little League Eastern Region World Series on August 5th. I'll be there photographing that tourney for 10 days and then onto Williamsport for the Little League World Series during the last half of the month. You'll be able to follow the action and view photo samples of the regional tournament at www.playballphotos.com. Nothing there now, but there will be shortly. Here are some samples from tonight (and last night's action). Unfortunately, I had some major camera problems during the rain storm and had to use my back up camera for most of these. Once again, online galleries have been separated by team to make browsing more manageable. Thanks guys... it was a great season... - Paul Order prints of SJSM American... Order prints of SJSM National... I want to thank all of you for allowing me to come out and shoot what was by far the most energetic and dynamic bunch of young athletes I have had the pleasure to photograph. You are a fantastic team and I look forward to seeing all of you next season as you venture forth on the road to Williamsport. Game link to order prints follow the samples and as per request, there is a separate link for the Islip team photos. Order prints from this game... Islip Team Photos... In a close well played game by both sides, Smithtown- St. James Nationals edged out Sachem 1-0 to advance to the top of the loser's bracket. They will play Islip on Wednesday evening. Here are some picture samples from the game. As always, you can order prints by clicking on the link after the samples. Order prints from this game... I had a hard time narrowing down samples from this game. Way too many good shots. Today was an optimal day for shooting. Cloudy skies, bright light, no hard shadows and nice backgrounds. So, rather than limit the samples, I'd figure I'd post all of the ones I liked and offer comments along the way. I'm proud to announce that I have recently been appointed as the official regional photographer for the East Region Little League World Series in Bristol, CT. That's where each of the 12 state winners in the East Region get a chance to go head to head and it's the last stop before going to Williamsport. Each thumbnail can be clicked to get a larger version, but please respect the work being presented by not printing, copying, or distributing. At the end of the samples gallery, I'm offering a couple of free screensavers memorializing the event that you can download to your computer. To order prints, click the link after the samples. Thanks, Paul Sports photography is about capturing peak action and/or great facial expressions. These are some of the ones that popped out at me while editing... Everyone loves bat on ball shots, "BOB" shots as they are traditionally called by sports photographers. Having a camera that shoots 8 frames per second surely helps capture more BOB shots, but there are no guarantees and it still takes a lot of luck to time it just right. Truth be told, BOB shots are cool, but I tend to find on deck candids, batters reading the sign from the coach, and follow throughs to be more compelling. Once again, though... facial expression is essential! A definite advantage of digital SLR's is the ability to do sequence shots. There is no lag time between shots because the Mark II carries a large internal buffer which allows you to rattle off as many as 45 shots within five seconds. If you are interested in purchasing any of the shots as a sequence, it can be matted and framed to your liking. Feel free to email me if you are interested. Here is one from today... by little Spirito at second. Great expression! Sideline candids have the potential to tell the story of the game. Sometimes it can be a jube shot (celebration shot), a batter on the on-deck circle, or just kids relaxing in the dugout. The thing that a photographer has to remember is that the game isn't over after the last out is recorded. Now, I'm starting to sound like Jay Mack. Anyway, here are some sideline candids from before, during and after the game today. Following the game today, little Viscount asked if I captured the diving play at short. I had to sadly admit, that I missed it. Just wasn't quick enough and I couldn't get a clean shot. But, we learn as photographers, to "sit on the shutter" even after the action is over. I thought the Viscount play was a total bust on my end, but in reviewing the photos tonight, this one jumped out and really tells the story of the play. What do you think? "Ha, ha... I got you out". Finally, as promised, I have a couple of free photos that you can use as wallpaper for your computer desktop. I thought this was a special moment in the game and exemplified the true sportsmanship of our players in Smithtown and the true meaning of what Little League Baseball is all about. We need to take a cue from these kids... if they can stand side by side with their opponents in front of all those people, surely we can stand by our friends on an everyday basis. The camera used at these games is the Canon 1D Mark II, capable of shooting digital pictures at 8 frames per second. The lens is the Canon 200 mm USM, f/1.8 and the 400mm USM, f/2.8... some of the finest lenses that Canon has ever made. If you have any special requests, such as a tighter or looser crop, just let me know and I will print to your specifications. Also, a variety of special effects such as black and white, motion blurs, diffuse filters, lens flares, graphic frames, etc. are available for a small additional charge. Photoreflect advises a 4-6 week time for delivery. However, since I do all printing on site rather than ship to photo labs, your delivery time will be considerably shorter.
